Understanding Fungal Nail Infections and Their Treatments

There are a few different fungi families that can mess with your nails:

Dermatophytes

These are the most common fungus jerks behind nail infections. Dermatophytes are fungi that just loooove nails and skin (gross).

Yeasts

Usually busy making our bread and beer, some yeasts like Candida can also set up shop under your nails if they get too overgrown and out of control. This can lead you to getting fungal nail treatment in London.

Moulds

Hard to believe, but those same green moldy spots that grow on old bread can sometimes infect nails too in rare cases. Sneaky little guys, those molds.

How'd They Get In There?

Fungi make your nails the perfect cozy home after doing stuff like:

- Going swimming a lot

- Sharing nail clippers or files with someone else

- Walking around barefoot in locker rooms

- Having super sweaty hands or feet

- Injuring or cracking your nail

They can even jump over from someone else's infected nail.

Who's at Risk?

While anyone can get a fungal nail infection, some folks are just more prone to them:

- Older adults (as we age, poor blood flow makes nails drier and easier for fungi to infect)

- People with diabetes or weak immune systems

- Athletes who share locker rooms

- People who wear really tight shoes or have damaged nails a lot

If any of those describe you, just be extra careful with good foot and nail hygiene.

The Tell-Tale Signs

Okay, so how can you actually tell if it's a fungal nail infection? Look out for these classic signs:

- Discolored nails (whitish, brownish, yellowish - you name it)

- Nails that get thicker, crumbly, or misshapen

- Dark streaks on the nail surface

- Nails with a brittle, chalky texture

- Funky nail smell (told you they're gross!)

Prevention is Key

To avoid any future fungus situations:

- Keep nails clean, dry and trimmed

- Use antifungal powders/sprays as needed

- Wear shower shoes in public areas

- Don't share nail clippers or files with others

- Treat any athlete's foot rashes right away

- Manage conditions that increase your risk
